MEET THE PEOPLE WE SERVE IN MEXICO

Mexico is the largest spanish speaking country in the world, and is 90% nominally Catholic. However, many of the Catholics are culturally Catholic and only 10% actually attend church regularly. The major issues in Mexico are a result of poverty, corruption, and organized crime. 60 percent of Mexicans struggle with poverty and low income, and while there is a relatively high literacy rate, education is certainly lacking, particularly in the more rural areas. In the northern parts of Mexico, religious organizations are the victims of coercion from the drug cartels and other criminal organizations. Priests are often threatened with kidnapping or death if they do not give in to the demands of the criminal organizations. In the rural villages, unemployment and poverty are rampant. Often, family members will go to the United States to try and support their families back home, leaving those in the villages susceptible to drug abuse, poverty, and delinquency.

LEARN ABOUT OUR MISSION IN MEXICO

In villages without roads, water, schools, or clinics, native peoples struggle for bare survival. Our missionaries have worked to create a cottage industry so rural families will not just survive, but thrive. Many of the the rural communities struggle to acquire their most basic necessities. Helping these rural communities to become productive and fight poverty is a large part of our mission in Mexico.

READ STORIES FROM THE MISSION FIELD

This blog post depicts the way Missionhurst’s missionaries have been called specifically to help the women left alone to raise their families. We focus especially on “teaching to fish” instead of “giving a fish.” The Workshop of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is a place where women can learn to sew and manufacture goods so they can provide for their loved ones. This pragmatic mission is inextricably tied to the mission to build Christ centered community among those who need Him most.
