The Democratic Republic of Congo

MEET THE PEOPLE WE SERVE IN THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has a myriad of problems, many of which are a result of the Belgian colonization which ended in 1960. Ever since, there has been political instability, corruption, and war. The Congolese Civil Wars that started in 1996 have been responsible for over five million deaths and immeasurable pain. Furthermore, much of the country struggles with poverty, access to clean water and basic necessities, and the fallout from years of war over the rich natural resources in the country. DRC has been called the “rape capital of the world” and violence against women is commonplace.

LEARN ABOUT OUR MISSION IN THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

The DRC has broad needs which are addressed wherever possible. Missionhurst is particularly focused on helping those who have been hurt most by the turmoil in the country including orphaned children, child soldiers, rape victims, and the poor. Over half the country survives on less than $1 a day, and few have access to clean water or education. However, God has been a refuge for many and the DRC has the largest number of Catholics in Africa. We try to strengthen the Christian communities to console those in need of hope.

READ STORIES FROM THE MISSION FIELD

The DRC is one of the biggest messes in the world, but it also has great potential. It is home to one of the largest rivers and rainforests, has a plenty of natural resources, and is primed for agriculture. This blog post sheds some light on the concerns of the mission in the DRC. The region is plagued by corrupt police and leadership which will do anything to maintain control, even deny basic needs to the population. Our missionaries refuse to give up though, and emphasize love in their dioceses by helping in any way they can.
