Sharing the Bread: Feed a Family in Guatemala

Gathering around a family table for a meal is a cause for celebration. It is a time to share in the struggles and joys of our lives with those who care about us most.

However, for many Guatemalan families, their plates are frequently empty.

$60 Feeds a Family for One Month

Prior to the pandemic, many families in Guatemala struggled with acute poverty. Over the last year their situation has become even more desperate. They lack the basic necessities to feed their children — simply rice, beans, corn, and cooking oil.

Now is the time for us to come together, to support and provide for one another. From your family table to theirs, let's share the bread.

The most pressing need in rural Guatemala is basic nutrition. At the Bethany Center, each meal we serve costs just 15 cents and, on average, our soup kitchens feed 250 children, ages 4-14, a day. There are also 100 food kits provided to 100 families every month. In the food kit, families receive food that can sustain them for a month.

However, sometimes these families cannot make it to the center for a hot meal. When this happens, their children go hungry that day. A gift of $60 provides a meal kit that feeds a family for one month. Here's how you can help:

$15 — Feed a family for one week

$30 — Feed a family for two week

$60 — Feed a family for one month

$360 — Feed a family for six months

About the Bethany Center

Nearly 30 out of 1,000 mothers in Guatemala will lose their babies due to a lack of basic education, hygiene, and medical care.

Of the children who are born safely, 50% will face chronic malnutrition between the ages of 0-5 and will suffer permanent, long-term physical consequences from the lack of proper nutrition.

The Bethany Center exists to change these statistics.

We are a ministry that serves the poorest of the poor, particularly women and children, in Guatemala. The center is collectively made up of four locations, including a central urban location, the infant and maternity center, and two rural soup kitchens.

The center provides food, healthcare services, education, training, and general support in these impoverished rural communities.
