The Catholic Church is facing a time of great difficulty, scandal, pain, and confusion. Many Catholics are wrestling with anger and doubt. It is especially during these times that we must turn to our brothers and sisters in Christ, the saints, and ask for the intercession of these heroic men and women who have gone before us in the faith and who stayed close to Christ through their lives.
During this novena, we will ask for the intercession of one of these powerful saints, the first canonized saint from the Philippines, St. Lorenzo Ruiz.
St. Lorenzo Ruiz was born in the year 1600. His family was devoutly Catholic.
St. Lorenzo grew up serving as an altar boy and later a sacristan at his parish in the Philippines.
He became a professional calligrapher in his adult life and remained close to the Dominican community.
St. Lorenzo and his companions died a slow, horrible death at the hands of their persecutors. They died as martyrs on September 29, 1637.
