Italy is a country that is prosperous on many fronts. It has and continues to offer much to the world, including its legal system, language, culture and innovations. It is a highly industrialized country and is a well-known producer of quality goods. Unfortunately, there is widespread unemployment as well as corruption and organized crime, paired with weak law enforcement. Up until 1984, Roman Catholicism had been the national religion. Organized crime is widespread throughout Italy, especially in the local and federal government.
