MEET THE PEOPLE WE SERVE IN HAITI

Decades of economic distress and natural disaster have left the people of Haiti impoverished and struggling to survive. Missionhurst’s goal is to bring awareness to Haiti’s economically and socially impoverished status, to provide education for children and young people and to highlight the ways in which donations can help to facilitate economic and educational development.

LEARN ABOUT OUR MISSION IN HAITI

An overarching concern in Haiti revolves around clean, accessible water. One small village in a mountainous region of Haiti, Bois de Laurence, is reaping the benefits of a project led by Missionhurst missionary Fr. Freddie Lucena: a system of potable water. This clean water system is also supported by the villager’s parishioners. Despite a shortage of financial resources, Lucena has also implemented a training program for teachers so that the children of Bois de Laurence may benefit from an education.

READ STORIES FROM THE MISSION FIELD

At the beginning of 2015, more than 85,000 Haitian inhabitants were still homeless from the devastating 2010 earthquake that also left at least 200,000 people dead. Following the earthquake, Haiti experienced its first outbreak of cholera in over 500 years. This deadly outbreak, coupled with a lack of clean water and health care, leaves Haiti struggling to recover from this natural disaster even six years later.

HELP SUPPORT THIS MISSION

While Haiti received help in the form of donations from national and international organizations in 2010, there remains a great need for awareness and advocacy for Haiti. There are multiple ways to support Missionhurst’s work in Haiti. Missionhurst sends missionaries to Haiti to educate children, train teachers and church leaders and to advocate for the helpless. Whether by donation, prayer, sponsorship or becoming a Missionhurst missionary, find which way suits you best.
